Hot off the presses!
I’ve been frantically trying to get a few final pieces done for the upcoming 2026 MFCA show in Philadelphia. One that’s been lingering on my bench is this wonderful piece from FeR Miniatures - Rollo of Normandy. It’s not that’s I haven’t been wanting to finish it, but I keep getting sidetracked by other projects. Recently, Rollo has been sharing time with Lesza (from Ignis Arts) - another magnificent sculpt that’s been stealing my attention. Thankfully I was finally able to get both done ahead of the show.
Today I thought I’d share a few progress shots of the Rollo bust so you can see some of the process. The piece offers a variety of textures and NMM opportunities to explore, which is why I was drawn to it. The sculpt - and the serious, almost weary expression on the face is just awesome. They provide an alternative head with a full helmet, but once I saw the piece in my hand I just knew I’d be opting for the bare head. Take a look at the shots below. I hope you enjoy them!
The Final Piece
Here you can see the final result. As I said, the fabric textures of the tunic, gambeson, and cloak offer a lot of room to play and explore. The hair was another fun challenge, working in a top / zenithal light source that allowed me to play with some highlights / shadows.
Texture!
Here’s another angle of the finished piece. You can really see all the various texture work that went into it. The wolf wrap above the cloak and the shield were also a lot of fun to paint. As you can see below, the reverse of the shield also included a large NMM element and a traditional viking pattern. The pattern also had to be weathered a bit to give it the battle worn look.
