Welcome to the
Figure Lab
Fine art miniatures by Michael Hilleary
I’ve been painting figures – in one form or another – for most of my life.
I began, like most of us crazy hobbyists, building plastic models … armor, planes, ships … whatever I could get my hands on. I was a creative kid, so painting and drawing became a passion. I eventually went to art school. There I learned about color theory, composition, and I was introduced to the great masters of art history.
Then a funny thing happened. I found myself sitting in front of a computer playing with Photoshop version 3 (before they even had layers!) and I completely fell in love. SO … I hung up my brushes and colored pencils to become a digital artist and graphic designer. That’s been my career for over 30 years now.
I love what I do, but, as time passed, I found myself pining for more “real” art … something I could do with my hands. I started to get back into figure painting, applying a lifetime of creative skills to an old love. Over time, I got pretty good - winning medals at local shows and becoming engaged with today’s robust international figure painting community. I eventually set up a studio. This site is meant to showcase my work, and hopefully provide insight and inspiration for fellow travelers. I’m always learning - from my own successes and failures and from seeing the wonderful work of other talented artists. If you have a question, feel free to reach out. Cheers!
